Glossary of Terms

Business Process Management (BPM)

The configuration or association of an organization’s processes with its strategic goals through various automation efforts, including workflow, XML Business Process languages and packaged ERP systems.

Content Management System (CMS)

A system providing capabilities for organizing, categorizing, and managing information so that it can be stored, searched, and rendered in multiple ways. A CMS may store its content either as complete documents or as reusable information objects (RIO) maintaining relational links between components. Additional features may also include electronic workflow capabilities and content revision control.

Electronic Data Interchange (EDI)

The structure and representation of electronic data exchanged between organizations including but not limited to purchase orders, invoices, payments, and inventory. The foremost specifications used to define Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) are ANSI X12 and the international standard, Electronic Data Interchange for Administration, Commerce and Transport (EDIFACT).

Enterprise Information Portal (EIP)

A Website model that serves as a single gateway to a company’s information and knowledge base.

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)

A software solution allowing for the automation and integration of business processes, the sharing of common data and practices, and the production and access of information in a real-time environment across an entire enterprise.

eXtensible Markup Language (XML)

An industry-standard protocol developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). XML utilizes a subset of the SGML standard designed to offer Web content and the interchange of structured data. The goal of XML is to enable generic SGML to be served, received, and processed on the Web in the way that is now possible with HTML.

Globalization

Globalization entails ensuring that data can accommodate a global community. This means ensuring the content meets cultural expectations.

Interactive Electronic Technical Manual)

A technical manual prepared in digital form and designed for interactive display to the maintenance technicians or system operator end users by means of a computer controlled viewer.*

Interoperability

Enables different systems (programs and operating systems, or hardware and software configurations) to work together and exchange data through the use of common standards and specifications.

Localization

Localization is defined as the creation of multiple language versions of products.

Reusable Information Object (RIO)

A unit of information/data that may be either reused and repurposed to form a complete content requirement or may be referenced from other various sources. A reusable object is usually designed to exist as a standalone object. Other terms used to define this concept are single-source content, Minimum Revisable Unit (MRU), Sharable Content Object (SCO), and Reusable Learning Object (RLO).

Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM)

Designed to meet high-level requirements for learning content management and systems. SCORM provides a model that references a set of interrelated technical specifications and guidelines built upon the work of the Aviation Industry CBT Committee (AICC), the IMS Global Learning Consortium and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) to create one unified ‘content model’.

Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML)

An international standard (ISO 8879) for defining device and system independent approaches for the representation of data in electronic form.

Technical Manual (TM)

Publications that contain instructions for the installation, operation, maintenance, training, and support of weapon systems, weapon system components and support equipment. Information may be presented in any form or characteristic including, but not limited to, hard copy, audio and visual displays, magnetic tape, discs, and other electronic devices. ATM normally contains operational and maintenance instructions, parts lists or parts breakdowns, and related technical information or procedures exclusive of administration procedures. Technical Orders (TO) that meet the criteria of this definition may also be classified as Technical Manuals.*
